At the heart of mindfulness is staying focused on the present moment. Why is this important? Well, more often than not, anxiety, stress and worry usually involve thinking about something that has already happened (in the past), or that might happen (in the future). We generally don’t feel anxious or stressed when we’re occupied in the present moment. So, by practising Mindfulness, and living less in our minds and focusing more on the here and now, we can reduce anxiety and worries. Another way of thinking about it is that Mindfulness means you are in control of your mind, rather than your mind being in control of you.
Over the course of 6 weeks, you will learn how to take control of your mind. When we’re able to do this naturally and effortlessly, stressful situations are less likely to overwhelm us and we’re more able to focus on tasks of our choosing. We may also develop a more positive outlook on life itself, and discover peace of mind and balance in our personal and work relationships.
The emphasis of this course is very much on the practical elements of mindfulness, but also contains detailed explanations of the brain and how it creates anxiety, depression, anger and stress – why this is important, and how mindfulness helps.
